24 Weeks

We are now 24 weeks along! That means 16 left until due date?!

Kurt and I spent last Thursday night through Saturday morning at the lakehouse. Lynn helped me make the pieces of for a colorful, DIY mobile that I think will be a neat eye-catcher over BunBun’s crib. The day after we came home, we installed baseboard in the nursery and in our bedroom. We’re definitely going to need to put in some extra moulding along the bottom edge to hide the gaps created by our insanely wavy floors. In medical news, I had to do the Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) on Tuesday. Luckily, the results showed no indication of gestational diabetes – phew! BunBun’s heartbeat came in at a strong 150 beats per minute at that appointment.

Development

BunBun is now the size of a GI Joe, about 13 inches long from head to toe, and he weighs about 1.5 pounds. He’s starting to develop taste buds, which means that he will soon be able to taste some of the stronger flavors of the things I eat through the amniotic fluid he swallows regularly. His lungs are developing significantly now from all of his practice breathing, and he is making cells that will produce surfactant, a material that will help his lungs expand and operate once he reaches the air. Eyebrows and lashes are starting to come in, but they lack pigment at this point. Unbelievably, his ears and fingernails are now complete!

Symptoms

Twice while on our (almost) daily walks this week, I’ve noticed some mild, brief cramps in my lower abdomen. My doctor wasn’t concerned and said it’s normal – maybe Braxton Hicks contractions or organs shifting around. After all, there is a little human growing in there! In addition, I’ve had the beginnings of some nasty calf cramps overnight most nights, but managed to avert “charley horse disaster” by stretching immediately. Apparently that’s normal, too.
