4 Weeks

As of today, I am four weeks (and a few days) pregnant! I kept the news to myself for two whole days before informing Kurt on his birthday. We were in our backyard, and I had just given him what he thought was his only birthday present: tickets to an upcoming Alabama Shakes concert. I had planted a note about the news under a book and tried to get him to pick it up, but he was distracted by a bee flying too close to our house. Hah! Eventually, I had to hand him the note.

That has to be one of the best moments of my life so far.

He certainly had a “deer-in-the-headlights” look for a split-second, asked me if I was serious, then immediately wrapped me up in the most amazing hug! After deliriously walking around the lawn with the pups for a few minutes, we plopped down in the grass and thyme on the back hill and shared our disbelief and excitement.

Because we are so early in the pregnancy, there is still a high risk of miscarriage so we’re trying to keep our expectations in check. Although it’s too soon to share the news with all of our family and friends, we have decided to inform our immediate family members as we see them over the next few weeks. The first ones to find out were Vinny and Dick during their visit yesterday. Kurt caught their moments of realization on video — priceless! We will likely be telling Kristin, Jim, and Samantha next.

Development

“BunBun” has become our nickname for the blob of cells that will, if all goes well, become our baby. This week, BunBun is officially an embryo. It is beginning to develop its bodily systems: circulatory, digestive, etc.

Symptoms

So far, I have experienced no obvious symptoms of pregnancy. I’m not looking forward to the flight to and from San Francisco next week as that may coincide with the beginning of nausea season. I would love to avoid that part, but it’s a sign of a healthy pregnancy – bring it on!

Due Date

BunBun’s due date at this point is February 15, 2018.
